Clean Water is Everyone’s Job to Protect
West Atlanta Watershed is the area within metro Atlanta that drains in to the Chattahoochee River and on to the Gulf of Mexico. The complete West Atlanta Watershed includes a total of 5 sub-watershed basins: Proctor, Utoy, Sandy, Peachtree, and Nancy. These names correspond respectfully to creeks within each, that act as tributaries (smaller bodies of water) of the Chattahoochee River.
The work of the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance covers Proctor, Utoy and Sandy Creek Watersheds only because people living in these watershed communities organized nearly 20 years ago based on the similarity of environmental challenges and in their lack of presence and voice at environmental decision making tables! Collectively these watersheds are impacted by a combine sewer overflow facility, a number of active and closed landfills and 4 superfund sites.
